Upgrading bearings in a reel?

Featured Replies

I was looking at bocca bearings, and they said something about upgrading the bearings, meaning that you can switch out your existing bearings, for something sealed with more?  I just bought a really clean abu garcia ambassadeur maxxar, and it is so nice!  I was just curious if it was possible to upgrade to more bearings, since it only has 2 stainless ball bearings?  Thanks for any info!  :o

wickyman,

Is this a Maxxar 3 spinning reel? What it has is what you get. 3 BB's at the most, one on each side of the body and maybe one for the rotor pinion gear. No way to increase bearing counts.

Is there a way to increase the smoothness of bearings?  It is an older maxxar, from like 1993.  A classic.  Thanks for the reply!

You could remove the original bearings and measure them, then goto Boca and search their products for replacements.

Another way to get the best out of what you have in the reel now, would be to remove the bearings clean them really well, and re-lube with a quality oil.

Ok, I got the dimensions back from abu garcia, for the bearings I need.  They are 3mm x 10mm x 4mm.  I looked it up on boca, and it came up with this list...  http://www.bocabearings.com/main1.aspx?p=quicksearchbearing

Does it matter which ones I choose?  I would assume the bearings with the highest RPMs would allow for a smoother action?  This is the set that I was looking at.  http://www.bocabearings.com/main1.aspx?p=product&id=7302&n=SMR103C-YZZ_#5_NB2  Does this seem like a better idea, than getting a set much lower on the abec scale?

Thanks for the help reel mech!  :o

wickyman,

Garcia stock bearings in their reels are ABEC3. You would feel a difference from ABEC 3 to ABEC5-6-7, If you had a reel with ABEC5' and wanted 7's, there is were you probably wouldn't feel any difference.

Remember with the higher tolerance bearings (ABEC5's and up) they need to be cleaned and re-oiled more often than the stock bearings.

Ok, that answered my questions there.  Now next up, what is a great, if not excellent lubricant for oiling up a reel?  Is there a specific grease, and oil that I should get a hold of?  I have heard that extreme lubricant is great, but I heard that it isn't the best for older reels...  An comments?
