Hook choice?

Featured Replies

What would be your choice for a hook for wacky rigged weightless senko's  and drop shot bass assasins?   I used circle hooks the last time out for both applications and feel I missed some bites I shouldnt have.

I like a 3/O circle on whacky 5 and 6 inch stick baits.

two cents

Gamakatsu Weedless finese 2/0.

how about for 4inch 'Senkos'? a 1/0 Finnese Weedless Gamakatsu? or a 2/0 of the same?

thanks

Am having the local pro's telling me #2 is about the biggest they use for the applications I mentioned above.  Gamatzu Finesse and drop shot, Octopus, Eagle Claw L42, Owner Mosquito, Cabela's live bait, Tru turn, all were used.   None of them liked the circle hooks because they seemed to miss to many bites, same as I observed.  Hook size surprised me a bit but will give #2's a shot.

Owner Mosquito in 1 or 1/0.  I used Gamakatsu WG finesse hooks for the longest time, but I get better hookups with the Owners.

3/0 gamakatsu finesse wide gap weedless

Coming from a catfishing background, I understand why a lot of people have problems with circle hooks.

Because of the hooks design you CAN NOT SET THE HOOK!!

A lot of bass fisherman (and some catfishermen like me) can't get used to this, so it doesn't work for me.

The reason a lot of catfishermen (and ocean fishermen) use them is that it's almost impossible to guthook a fish with them. Due to it's design it will slide out of the throat and catch in the corner of the mouth. But if you set the hook, it comes out too fast and will slide out of the mouth as well.

Yep Taliesin, I agree with you.   After more than 50 years of setting the hook its just not in me to not smackem when they bite.

I use Gamas Gary Yamamoto splitshot/circle hooks. I can only find them on his website but man are they effective. But I only use them for my wacky rigs.

For my small trout worms, etc, I use #8 Gama Octopus Circle hooks. The only time I'm not using a circle hook is when I'm t-riggin.
