There is a thread, I think it's in the general forum, about good equipment people have bought for less than $75. You may want to look there too.

I like the Pflueger Supreme spinning reel that can be found for $90 at some stores like Reeds. IMO, it's a good low cost "investment" in reels. I know the Shimano Symetre get's great reviews, and it's in the $75 range.

I think the Berkley Lightning rod is a fine rod for the money. I know others will chime in suggesting Cabela's rods and Shimano's rods too. I'm sure those would be fine choices too.

Shimano Clarus $59- Great rod for the money, I have one that I use for light inshore fishing

Shimano Sahara $59, or get the Shimano Symtre for $79.  I have both of these reels, I like the Symtre a little better. I use 4000 series but they serve dual purpose salt and freshwater. 2500 is about the right size for Bass.

As Pfluemis stated the Supreme is a nice reel too. If fished more freshwater I would buy one, however it has been my experience that my Pfluegers did not hold up as well as my Shimano's in the environment that I use them in.

You could also take and get the Sahara reel I suggeted and take the extra $20 and buy a Shimano Compre rod which is a step up from the Clarus. Or if you could find a St. Croix Avid on sale for around a 100 you would have great multipurpose setup.
