Freshwater Vs. Saltwater Reels

Featured Replies

I was looking through a catalog today, and I found a reel I really like.  The only problem is it is an offshore/saltwater reel.  Any reason why I couldn't use it for freshwater applications?  The only thing I'm thinking is that the saltwater versions have a heavier drag with corrosion resistance.  Am I right?

What kind of reel was it, spinning or level wind. True offshore level winds or conventional reels due not cast light lures well. They are mainly used for trolling apllications and for chunking heavy baits such as live menhadden, etc. Also saltwater reels are supposed to offer a higher level of corroisn protection, however some so called freshwater reels will work in the saltwater envrionment. I use 4000 series Symtre's for inshore applications and have never had any issues. I just rinse them down after every use.

Hoe this helps.
