New vs Old avids, number of guides?

Featured Replies

Quick question...I was recently trying to sell one of the Avid's I purchased from Reeds and one potential buyer asked me about the number of guides on the rod.  He stated that the new avids had 10 guides and the old ones had 8...is there any truth to this? All the rods I bought from reeds have 10 guides .... if so Reeds sent me new avids ....

New Avids are easily recognizable by the "IPC" construction sticker they have.

Different models have different number of guides.

New Avids

Are day in the market already?

I can't find one, other than the initial prototypes.

you can order the avids direct ...... i believe there web site is : www.stcroixrods.com ,,, this is where i orderd my new legened tourney bass rods .....  ive had the new ltb rods for over a month now ..... the main reason i dont believe your seeing them aroud is because most stores wont order till spring .....

if you look at my link ..... on the main croix page theres a spot that says whats new .... click on that and you can see the new avids ..... there is a IPC decal next to the st croix ..... sweet lookin sticks ....

old avids have 10 guides too....both mine do...and my friends.

I am currently building on one of the new Avid blanks.

The difference between the new and the old rods is the blank finish. The old models had a matte carbon finish, the new blanks have a carbon pearl gloss finish. As far as the guide counts, that sometimes depends on the length of the rod blank, but mostly how many guides it takes to keep the line up off of the rod blank when it is under a fighting load.

Just my .02¢

Well, you just confirmed what I had thought when I looked at the new rods in the '08 catalog. I quite like the matte carbon finish. It goes well with my older Premier, other Avid, and my IMX. I'm not too big a fan of the pearl gloss finishing. :-/

The only fully finished rods you should be able to order directly from St. Croix are their ice rods. All other rods should not be available from their online store, and can be purchased from a St. Croix retailer.

can ya provide a link to where I can buy rods (sans the ice rods) from their website?

I'd like to see that too. They list prices on their website, but they even have an explanation of why you CANNOT order fully finished rods directly from them. ::) I also have been on their site numerous times, and I have never found a link to buy their rods directly from them.

How do I purchase a St. Croix rod?

St. Croix rods may only be purchased from authorized St.Croix retailers. Go to the dealers section of our Website to select a dealer near you.

Why can't I purchase my rods directly from St. Croix?

We are dedicated to distributing our rods exclusively through a system of specialized fishing tackle retailers throughout the USA and Canada. These are independent businesses that employ knowledgeable people who are trained to help you select the best St. Croix products for the particular type of fishing in your area. They are happy to assist you in the selection of St. Croix rods, and will special order any model which they do not have on-hand.
