Mono Line Poundage & Brand For Swimbait Use

Featured Replies

Always used braids when I use my swimbaits, but looking to going w/ a mono line.

Just want to know what you guys throwing swimbaits use for line brand & poundage.

I have Mattlures Baby Bass & some Osprey 6 & 8" swimbaits, AC Cole swimbaits, & some others.  I have other models that range in weights from 1 oz-8 oz.

Setup I have is a Okuma Guide Series 7'6" heavy, split grip baitcast rod.  And the reel is a Quantum 1421 MB Classic or I'll use my Shimano Cardiff 301.  Both have braided line, but the Cardiff I'll mostly use for musky.  So the Quantum has 60 lb Izorline braid.

most guys i know are using the p-line cxx ..... i know most are using the 20lb .... i fish in wisconsin so we dont have the donkees that they do in cally ,,, ive been using the p-line cxx 17lb moss green .... i dont mind this line when toosin the big baits .....

For up to 3 oz I use 20 lbs and above that 25 lbs., CXX was my line of choice until Evolution came out, this one handle better, smaller diameter and as strong as CXX. I like braid a lot but not for swimbaits.

I use a tunned  Cardiff 301 for my heaviest lure.

Your Okuma H should be fine as an all around SB rod, be aware the weight limit is 5. oz. I have the 7.6 MH for the smaller lures and up to 2 oz, above that the tip is too soft to unload properly.

Best luck with them.

I use a 7-6 Heavy Okuma with Cardiff 400.  I use Power Pro 25#.  Well I should say my buddy used this when I bought it from him, and it works for me.  I through 3-6 oz baits.
