Cranking Power - Daiwa Zillion 100HA vs Shimano Core/Mg

Featured Replies

I'm considering a Zillion 100HA (or Zillion HLC) as a spinnerbait/buzzbait reel. Does it have more cranking power than a Shimano Core/Mg? My main criteria is cranking power, but I want at least a 6.3:1 gear ratio. I'm curious how the Zillion 100HA's cranking power, or Zillion HLC, compares to Shimano's HEG reels, specifically the Core/Mg

You aren 't going to find many answers here where most of the guys won 't spend 250 dollars in a reel, less likely they shell out the 350 dollars in a Core and highly unlikely they shell 450 dollars in a HLC.

Which one will have more cranking power ? hard to say, I can say taking in consideration that the Zillion HA is practically identical in gearing to the old TDZ ( which I own ..... several  :) ) and that I do own the Core to make a comparison the cranking power is about the same.

Keep in mind one thing, Daiwas ( Sol, Fuego, Zillion, TDZ, Alphas, and even the minute Pixy ) have always had that huge main gear ( that bulge on the handle sideplate isn 't there just for nothing ) while Shimanos until recently have it.

Now another thing to ponder about is the handle length, the Zillion HA comes with 90 mm handle, the HLC comes with 90 mm carbon fiber handle. Theoretically speaking a longer handle gives you more leverage, I say theoretically and it could be true, however my Scorpion and Scorpion Mgs come with a 70 mm handle and the truth is I feel no difference in cranking power vs my 80 mm handle reels, some will say they feel the difference but not me.

The Zillion hands down. I prefer a 'solid' reel with power for crankin', and the Zillions aluminum frame and 90mm swept handle is where it's at as far as power reeling. I do use a pair of TD-Z 103p's right now, but will say my original Scorpions (not the mg) were some of the best cranking reels I have ever used. I still want to buy two more regular scorpions and put bassart 90mm carbon handles on them for ultimate cranking.  Ultra light weight isn't a must for cranking...your reel is pointed down towards the water most of the time...taking the weight off of your wrists.

Got both reels.

Fished the Zillion exclusively today, be it with a Frog.  Hmmm, as far as cranking power its seems like a larger cranking handle 89mm would give the Zillion a slight advantage.  I also like the swept handle, but not sure if it gives more cranking power.

The HLC is one sweet looking reel, approaching the weight of the Core, but I don't think its worth the extra price.

Go with the Zillion.
