Daiwa ss tournament1300 question

Featured Replies

Am considering this reel for wade/long cast fishing. Not necessarily for bass , but for other species. Anyone have an opinion on this reel ? Are there better long cast design spinning reels ?

Man, those Daiwa SS spinning reels have been around forever. I had a couple way back (early 90's) and I loved 'em. I used them for wade fishing also. You can launch lures with those reels, no doubt. There are probably some designs by now that will cast just as far or farther than the SS but not many will last as long.

I don't really know, but you have to remember the technology in this reels is I'm sure over 15 years old. I'm guessing there will be better options and i think in distance the rod will play a big part. Please give a price range and I'm sure we can help you out.

OK, if there is a better option, say under $100.00, name it. Casting performance is paramount.

I've used Diawa SS1300 (and 700s 1600) spinning reels for what seems to be around 20 years.  Still use them even though they are old.  There is no bail spring to break.  Never had a problem with them.  The front drag is excellent.

There are smoother cranking spinning reels and reels that the handle is quicker to stop on the anti reverse.  And, perhaps the "new" big spool reels that are claimed to cast further will--I just don't know.  I doubt if there is any reel with a similar size and shape spool that would outcast the ss1300.

For making long casts with suspending jerk baits I used the 1600 reel with  15# test power pro line.  The much larger spool does increase casting distance over the ss1300.

What I don't know is the reliability of the new ss series.  I recently purchased my third ss700 and noted that it was not made in japan as my others are.

I've got an old 1600 that's my main large bait/striper reel. Picked up a new model and seemed a little rough compared to mine. (cheaper made) If you can find one...the SS II with instant anti-reverse was the best Daiwa made in my opinion.
