Setting brakes on BPS reel (I figured it out! Thanks!!)

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I tried searching this topic, but came back empty. I apologize if I'm "beating a dead horse". I came upon a 3+ year old BPS Mega Tournament reel with 4 ball bearings/graphite body. I'm trying to set the casting brakes, but I don't see notches like the Shimano brakes. They look like their not set, but the only other setting allows them to pop out from the spindles/shafts. I've searched the 'net pretty well to find no information available on the subject. Does anyone know how to set these brakes up or know of a good website with pictures or perhaps a website with copies of the schematics and reel instructions? Any information is appreciated.

Thanks,

Fisher

Just a thought but I would CALL Outdoor World Rod & Reel Repair (417) 873-5274 (www.basspro.com/repair), being as they are the BPS service center, and ask them for any info on that reel.

Just my .02¢

Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!!

Thanks guys.  I can probably just take it to the store the next time I go.  Surely a clerk at the reel counter can help me.  Besides, the classic sale is beginning this weekend and I'm probably going anyhow.  I thought about contacting BPS via e-mail and your response doesn't surprise me Muddy.  Thanks for trying, though.  I'm surprised that I'm the only one to have asked this.

I guess that says something about you

Watch it old man.  At least I can operate a trolling motor.  ;D

Fisher,

Can you take a picture and post it.  We might be able to look at the picture and answer your question.  Just a thought.

1. Turn the knob on the left side plate to the left to the "unlock" position.

2. Pull the left side cover off.  You may have to put your thumb on the spool to keep it from moving as you remove the cover.

3. On the side of the spool, you will see the six brakes.  They look like little plastic "top hats" with a hole on the top.

These brakes are centrifugal.  As the spool spins, the centrifugal force pushes the brakes out away from the spool axel and they press against reel thus creating drag.

4. To turn all of the brakes off:

With your fingernail, gently apply pressure on the small flange (the rim of the top hat) towards the spool axel.  You will feel a slight click as the brake engages a small clip.  Do this for all six brakes.

5. To turn individual brakes back on:

With your fingernail, gently apply pressure to the flange away from the spool axel.  Again, you will feel a slight click as the brake moves past a small clip.  You will notice now that the brake is free to move away from the spool axel.  It is held in place by an orange colored spring-loaded retainer.  The retainer allows the brake to move out towards the reel frame as the spool turns at high speeds and then retracts the brake as the centrifugal force can no longer overcome the pull of the spring.

6. So in essence, you can set all or none of your brakes.  When I set three of six brakes, I will alternate every other brake to even our the load, although I've been told by a bass pro (Jimmy Houston) that it doesn't really matter.

Hope this helps.

Shellback,

I already knew how to set them, I just couldn't find the notch that held them "on" or "off".  Your directions ARE very detailed and should be saved to help someone else who doesn't know how.  Thanks.

Thanks to all who offered help.  I guess you guys just prompted me to think about it a little more.  I ended up taking another BPS reel (similar) apart and noticed that the notches were made on the end of the spool, not the shaft (or 90 degrees in another place).  After setting three of the six magnets, the thing casts like a charm.

Thanks again, everyone!!
