Steez 103HLA

Featured Replies

For those that read the Daiwa fan, but thread I decided on a Steez 103HLA.  I was curious as to if anyone has used this reel and how it compares to the Daiwa Alpha Type F (Japanese SOL) and the Zillion in general, and whether it was a great choice for a pitching reel?

Thanks all,

Steve

Excellent choice for a pitching reel.  I have the JDM version (103H) and I love mine.  In my opinion, they fish very similar to the Alphas reels. (I also have four of these)

You may notice you'll have to do some tweaking on the settings when you start pitching with it according to what size bait your using.

They are very easy to backlash until you get used to them.  Start out with your spool tightend up to eliminate any sideplay in the spool.  Set your magnetic control at least on 7 and that will get you started in the right direction.  You're gonna love that reel!! ;)

Just to get back with you, the 103 is from what I hear is great for pitching and flipping and light soft plastics. It has the V style spool as opposed to the flat that the 100 has. I would guess you can get a cheaper reel that is similar though. I have the zillion and use the 7.1 for buzz and 6.3 for spinners and 4.9 for cranks. They cast great.  Never really thought of it as a pitching reel though. Again in Michigan not a lot to pitch or flip too. I have a steez 103 on hold waiting for the the reel trade in but think I am going to go with the 100 due to looking to throw heavier baits. Its my first steez though and look forward to using it. Hope this mess was some help?

Thanks for the confidence, I'm going to guess that your recommendation on settings being critical is the smoothness because of bearings and what not, or at least a positive aspect of the reel, correct?

I purchased this reel as I like to flip finesse jigs, and what not with when I want a slower fall, or a finesse presentation, and even though I haven't fished my new Zillions I was told they are more for heavier baits which is fine as they will be used for carolina rigs and frogs, however I wanted a little faster gear ratio than my Alpha's but to say pretty similar as I absolutely love them.

Thanks again.

If you like the way the Alphas palms in your hand when fishing then you are gonna love the feel of the Steez.  They are just a bit smaller than the Alphas.  They feel great when you palm them.  Those settings I recommended are just for starters until you get used to that beast.  Before you know it, you'll have your mag-control set on 3 and you'll be pitching to brush 35-40 ft. in front of you.

I have a 103ha and took it out yeaterday for my first time and had a hell of a time with backlashes. I am definetly gonna need practice as it aint for novices. I can cast my Citica all day but this is a different beast. I am not giving up yet as it is super smooth and light
