St. Croix Rod for shaky head

Featured Replies

I need some advise on which St. Croix spinning rod I should get for fishing shaky head, drop shot, whacky, etc.

AS68MXF - I own this rod and love it. It's my first nice rod that I have ever owned. Used it a lot this past year with weightless T-rigs, wacky wormin, and some shakey heads.

The rod is very light and strong.

edit: I meant 6'8" not 6'6"

Thanks!  I have been reading posts on this site for some time now and just soaking in all of the useful information.

Finally decided to join in!

I also have the Avid 6'8 MXF to use in open water and a 6'M around docks.  They are both great rods.

If you are like me and like the smaller versions of shakey heads, opt for a ML. I prefer spinning rods. The first Croix I ever bought was a Premier 66ML lure rate of 1/8-1/2. These can be had for around $100. What I think are better choices for shakey head in that range of weights would be your choice of the Avid or Legend Tournament series in 6'9" ML XF.  Medium lights have plenty of backbone to fight and land fish. I landed a 5.7 lb kicker out of a dock with one last summer.

What he said ;)

I have an Avid AS69MLXF that I really like.  I landed my 2 biggest fish ever on this thing.  As a matter of fact, I'm considering selling it simply because I have a few too many rods.  PM me if you're interested.

I like the 63mxf but like a shorter rod for shaky. If deep water rather go with the 6'8"

X3

I use my AS69MLXF for casting shakey heads to bass and jig/minnow/leech/twister tail combos to walleye.  I love this rod.  If I'm casting a spinning rod, chances are I'm grabbing this one.

It also is a killer dropshot and unweighted floating worm rod.  This one sees a lot of time on the water in the Spring.
