Line issue, baitcaster issue, or is it me

Featured Replies

I was out fishing today, and I just put knew braided line on my BC's,  What I noticed was, when I casted,my line would seem to roll under the spool instead of coming off the spool from the top.  Which at that point would bird nest.  I let all the line off the spool, wand it back on the spool and got the same problem.  Would someone know what causes this.  Is it the line, the BC or Me.

What's the line size? Sounds like you are using a small diameter line (20lb?) and it's digging into itself. You may want to try going to a 50lb test line. It behaves much better. Also try to keep some tension on the line when you reel, like after a backlash. I hope this helps.

yup as alpster said, your line is probably too thin and spooled too loose on the reel. when this happens it is very easy for the line to just slip deeper into the spool and then when you go to cast give you a backlash.

like alpster said, get thicker line and spool it on tighter!

good luck!

Did you back up your braid with mono or did you tie the braid direct to the spool.  Braid's lack of stretch is something of a mixed blessing.  If you try to tie direct to the spool, the lack of stretch prevents the line fromfirmly fixing itself to the spool.  When you cast it rolls underneath and does not come off the spool.  Hope this helps.
