Went out this weekend and was skunked just after ice out.....just felt good to get out there. Anyway I was throwing some Rattlin Vibes and Traps on my crankin setup. 10lb Cabelas line. After a couple hours of throwing I noticed that deeper into the spool there was a piece of line coming up that was not connected to anything. So I pulled line off the spool until I got to it and sure enough it was frayed off. How could this happen in the middle of the spool like that? Obviously being in the middle of the spool it never touched water. Was throwing the lures and line on my Citica 100dsv. Thoughts?

You know that actually happened to me last year when I went out for the week at Mark Twain Lake in Missouri.

However, My brother a experienced fisher had stated that sometimes we don't know there is a small backlash in our spool, and all it takes is one small loop within the spool to snap a line inside the spool.

Didn't understand him of course, But I do think it's where you cast and reel..each time you reel it in, that loop inside the spool becomes tighter and snaps the line perhaps.  

Just a thought.  Not actually sure.

Didn't have a backlash that I noticed but like you said it could have been just one small loop.

Yeah I understand, When I looked at my spool it seems that I had no backlash, or anything like that, I kept on casting as I would always do.  But when I came to find that one little end sticking out of the spool like that, I think it was a small loop in the spool that snapped the line as it gotten tigther.

I witnessed some have this problem in a tourney on Sunday and a few minutes later is happened to me. One time my buddy had just tied on a LC trap, and first cast it busted in the spool and went flying, then a little while later it happened to me. I was wondering the same, could it be the cold weather. We were also both using fluoro. :-/

Doubt it being the weather. For me anyway...it was almost 68 degrees out.

Well, If I may make a suggestion.  Before every fishing trip, if it's a Open bait reel, is to drag the lines out til you have no more line on the spool.  And redo it.  Only do it slowly, as you reel you should catch the loops that gets tangled.  At least that is what I do, espeically with heavier lines like 14 and up.  

They do have a tendency to loop out and tangle without knowing.  I very much doubt its the weather.    Well, I hope it all helps out.  It does with me.
