Well, I needed a new rod and reel like a needed a kick to the groin BUT curiousity got the best of me. Plus I haven't bought any quantum gear in a long time and I wanted to give them another shot.

SO I bought the Code/Energy PT rod combo from bass pro. Uhm Actually make that 2 of them.

I got to spend a little time trying them out and here is my honest review.

The code is packed full of some nice features on paper. It has the very nice external centrifugal adjustment, 8 bearings, titanium guide, and offers the burner gear 7.0:1(I didn't get the burner). The reel was much smaller and low profile than it appeared in the adds...which I found very appealing.

I paired these reels with two 7 ft energy PT rods. One of them is M one is MH. The reels performance was decent to good. I was throwing a 4" Dinger into some strong winds and had no problem with backlashing. The external centrifigal braking system is a BIG plus to me. I was able to quickly adjust the reel to the wind conditions which made for nice performance. The reel gave me pretty good distance on the cast. HOWEVER, these reels are not near as smooth as they should be..especially having 8 bearings.

Most of my reels are shimano and Bass Pro Extremes. Both of these reels are much smoother than the Quantum. But this doesn't effect the performance of the reel IMO. The reel performed well and was easy to fish. In fact, I quickly got used to it and enjoyed fishing with them. They seem to be a good bargain if they hold up. Which only time will tell.

Now for the real surprise! The Quantum Energy PT rods!!! I wasn't expecting much but I REALLY liked these rods. Again I bought a 7' M and 7' MH split grip version. Both rods had good action and were very comfortable to fish. They offered good sensitivity and felt a lot less bulky than my Extreme rods and very similar to my buddies Loomis rods. He uses all Loomis and was also very impressed with these rods.

Overall, this is a very good combo at a great price. I am not completely sold on the Code yet but I like them and they will make the cut this weekend on the lake. I am, however, very sold and surprised on the rods. So for what its worth, I give the reel a 8 out of 10 and the rods a 9.5 out of 10.

Here is some pics but they aren't the best. These are GREAT looking rods and I am surprised they haven't been talked about more. I am not a quantum guy but these have changed my mind a little. Good stuff....

Thanks for the review.  Recently the PT rod was recommended to me.  I've been curious about it since it has a lot of great features at a value price.  I've been waiting for reviews to see if the great features translate into a quality rod.  Cheers!

yes it does.

I've never used any Quantum reels, however in the last three years I've been using the Quantum rods. I think they are one of the best rod values on the market. Great performance, especially for the price.
