St.Croix Premier

Featured Replies

Just curious on this rods rep, i have heard the Triumphs weren't to big of a hit and i know the Avids are a favorite of a lot of people so i was curious  about the premier rods. Likes? dislikes?

The only complaint about Premier rods I've heard from others is muddy talking about his guide inserts falling out. I've noticed that the rods are usually a little softer than their power rating, at least compared to All-Star and BPS offerings. I have the 6'6" Med fast premier, and it's so soft I use it as my dropshot rod. Not much backbone.

Also, it's really easy to pick up an '07 Avid for 100 bucks or so (used on the swap and sell), so it doesn't make much sense to get a premier for the same price. A little patience could pay off huge. And yes, there IS that much of a difference between the two.  :)

A lot more forgiving than the SC3, 4, and 5's, on misuse.....

I build on the SC2 (Premier) blanks all the time. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the blanks.

It's all in the components that St.Croix® use. When I build on the SC2 blanks I use Fuji® Hardloy guides.

The St Croix® Premier's use Batson Forecast hard aluminum-oxide guides. Probably the reason so many of the Premiers get a bad rap for guide failures.

Tight Lines!!!!

The guides on the Premier are a joke. The first one I ordered from BPS had two guides that fell out (they were still in the plastic wrap with the rod) and and to ship it back. Last year had one pop out and repaired. This year had another pop out. The bad thing is I bought this rod in 05' and it only come with a 2 year warranty. I will never buy a Premier again.

I am thinking about returning it to St. Croix with a note saying keep the d**n thing. I will have as much in repairs than the rod is worth.  I am fuming now that I have read a reported problem. Thought maybe that this was an isolated incident or my misfortune. Love the rod itself (crankbait), but I cant take the constant equipment failure. It spend more time in the shop than on the water.

I have a 7' MH spinning rod that I have only had a short while.  The action is exactly what I want for fishing Senkos.  I haven't had any trouble with the guides.  I bought it for $89.

I have five Premier rods, two of which I've had for twelve years and another for ten. I have never had any issue with the guides and these have been awesome reliable rods. I have purchased All Star and BPS rods since then because they were on sale but in the last two years I have gone back to St. Croix and purchased two more Premiers. I love them!!!!

I should notice that I own a LTB too. No problems with it. I just shipped my Premier with a letter. I didnt include a payment so I am sure they will be contacting me with how to service the rod. I could care less at this point 3 years 3 repairs. Brutal.

I just ordered a 6' Premier Medium Fast. Hadn't heard anything bad till now...

Don't worry.  You will like it and it has a good warranty.

Well, you quoted me. And it says "used on the swap and sell"

There's one on there right now for $100 even.  :-?

I have been using them exclusivley since 2000.  I have about a dozen or so of them.  I have had no trouble what so ever.
