Alphas for pitching?

Featured Replies

What do you guys think about using a Daiwa Alphas for pitching?

Not enough drag pressure. I would lean more to the Revo STX.

I have a "few" of them, they work fine for me.  I have done some drag upgrades with Carbontex washers and probably pushing 8.5-9.0 lbs. of drag pressure.  I only use about 6.5 lbs. of drag most of the time.

What is a 'few'?  ;D

They should work fine.  I pitch routinely with my Alphas.  Heck, I've pitched just fine with my Pixies as well.  I think drag is a little overrated.

Nah, if it ain't got 56.7 lbs. of drag pressure it's crap.  :)

If you set the hook and the fish is heavy cover, do you want 9lbs or 20+lbs of drag pressure.......I want a hard hookset and to turn the fish and keep him moving in my direction.

Do you really know what 20 lbs. of drag pressure looks like? Try it sometime on your rod. I hope you have a good warranty program. Better yet, set your drag at 20 lbs. and tie your line to a cinderblock and then kick the block off your porch or deck and then tell me what happened. Your not gonna like the outcome.

6-10 lbs. of drag is more than sufficient in getting fish out of heavy cover.

Edited to add: My intention was not to sound like a smartass even though after I read my reply it does sound that way. I'm sure the Revo is a great reel and indeed it has a monster drag. I just wanted to let pipho know that an Alphas could be used for pitching. Apologies to flippin4it if it was taken this way.

Burley, you ain't right!!  :) :) ;D

Are you kidding?  A Revo can stop a coal truck in it's tracks.  That's why I love my Premier.  I sit on the porch and catch tandem log trucks all day long.  :) ;D
