Chatter baits Booyah and others...

Featured Replies

Hey all...

I am fishing in a pond with REAL dirty water. I have been trying every kind of bait including baits with rattles and scents. (spinners, jigs etc.) Nothing, no fish.  I picked up a chatter bait today. A "three in one bait" as Booyah describes it. The question:

Any advice on how to fish these? They seem pretty versatile, but I have never used one.

Thanks in advance

I do best with these type of baits fishing them two ways:

With a steady retrieve.  Change speeds and add a slight pause now and then to see what the fish may want.

Lift and drop, with the bait deadsticked on the bottom.  I have had a lot of fish just pick up the bait off the bottom.

Good Luck!

Like he said ^.steady retrieve could also be referred to as "slow rolling"and can be done at different depths after you figure out how fast the bait sinks. If deep, you will have to use at least a 3/8 or 1/2 oz chatter style bait to keep it down.Slow rolling near the bottom is a great tactic but usually needs a heavier bait since these achieve so much lift.

Can be a good dirty water bait, since the vibration is very heavy with these.

I have only caught one fish on these, an 8.5lb long-nosed gar.  He hit it on a slow but steady retreive.  I have not tried letting it sink to the bottom and may have to give that a shot.  I have also had other long-nosed gar follow the boogie bait right to my boat on numerous occasions.

i like burning them over weeds and the bite is very aggresive

The blade is really the nice thing to it.  You can use them on standing jigs/shaky head jigs and have a plastic fish look like its feeding and have nice swimming action when.

Ive had my greatest luck with this lure fishing it with quick jerks and lettin it pause for a quick 3 secs, followed by more jerks all the way in. Although I don't do anything great with this lure, but it does catch fish.

I haven't had the success with these lures that alot of other fishermen have. I will say this, when they hit that lure they SLAM it. I usually fish it with a slow steady retrieve.

i have caught a bunch of fish on the gambler swim blade w/ a slow steady retrieve.  sometimes when you are reeling you can feel the blade not vibrating and give it a jerk and it starts up, i have caught fish doing this right after the jerk.  so reeling and then giving it a good sharp jerk every now and then will also trigger bites.

and like was said earlier almost all the fish i catch on these baits absolutely hammer it.

I use the chatterbait and fish it one of two ways. Steady retrieve or fish it with jerks like a jerkbait. The biggest fish so far has been a 4lber and he hit it after I turned the handle once! It is an agressive bite! I don't fish it a lot but I like to throw it instead of a spinnerbait. I use it above grass or along a grass line.
