Can you Shorten a Rod handle?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I have a rod that I love for jerkbaits it has the perfect action for me, but the handle is about an inch and a half too long.  Does anyone know how to cut the handle down?  That extra length catches on everything as I am using it.

Thanks

Dremel tool cutting wheel should leave a nice clean cut.

i have never done it, but if i was gonna do it, thats what i'd use. i'd remove the cork with a razor and pliers, and then cut the grahite with the dremel.

it might damage the integrity of the rod, so i'd be careful if you decide to do it.

I've shortened the handle on a couple of rods just by sawing off the part I didn't want. One was just this year and I put a rubber butt cap on it that's sold by Cabela's. The other one was a few years ago and my butt cap for that one was a rubber chair tip from a hardware store.

Might screw up the balance, but maybe you don't care about that.

Balance is not a big deal, I will be using it for jerkbaits.  It was  a rod that I have used for cranking in the past, but the handle is just too long.  Does anyone build rods on here, because I would like some tips, I might even try to get fancy with it.

I used a hacksaw to cut an inch off my handle.  Just be careful and go slow.  I left the cork on and just cut through the cork and blank.

The rod is more tip heavy than before but it's not a big deal. But the shorter handle is so much more comfortable!

You can search through the Tacklemaking forum on here for more ideas and tips.

Good luck!

There are several members that build rods. Ask the question on the Tacklemaking Board...

If you do it and it does screw up the balance, just make a hollow cap for the end and mess around with some lead weights in the handle. You could even get some lead powder and put it in a little bag and mess around with that. Problem solved.
