Question about Abu/Quantum/Shimano Rod and Reel combo's

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I was at the Gander mountain store the other day trying to fend off the bait monkey and noticed something on the racks.  They had a Curado, Energy PT, and Abu STX combos on the racks.  They come with a  matched brand rod.  I was wondering if these are new reels or returned/reconditioned reels.

Reason I ask is that they combos were either cheaper or the same price as the reel itself.  For example, the Revo STX came with a Fenwick heavy action rod for 199.  But at the reel section the Revo STX was 199 by itself.

Why would they be the same price?  It was about the same for the Curado combo and the Energy PT Combo also.

I guess the combos dont have a box for the reel.  But is there any other difference?

Just wondering.

Yea I did also LOL in fact I got 2. Rod and reel combos were buy one get the 2nd for half off. Just wasnt sure if they were first quality reels. There was an instruction manual for the reel stapled to the rod though.

Same thing up here in WI. I bought 3 revo s combos @ $100 each and my nephew bought 1. Had $40-50 Fenwicks on them. Give the reels a good workout over the weekend and they did well. The 7' rods were o.k. too, but action was a little to heavy for my use.

The first two that I bought were over Fathers Day and there was a sign buy one get 2nd for half price.  So actually the 1st two only cost me $150

I can't speak for Gander Mountain but at BPS reels are removed from the origional box to build some combos. If the combo is made using a high end reel such as a Curado or Revo it is a first quality reel. There just isn't room to store empty boxes so the boxes are discarded...............Al
