Removing line twists

Featured Replies

My rods with a texas rig and my spinnerbait rod get pretty bad line twists by the end of the day.  Is there a way to get rid of the line twist without changing the line or stripping line off the reel?

If on a boat simply let line out behind the boat while moving. I do this weekly - it keeps all twist out of line including braid..

I also let my line untwist in the water down river and troll upriver

Correct, just remove all hooks, snaps, etc fro the end of your line, let out most of the line, engage reel and let drag for a few minutes. Reel in and you are ready to get it twisted up again!

That sounds nice and easy.

Thanks for the tip, :(

You may need to check out your T-rig. Sounds as if you are leaving a kink in the worm. It needs to hang perfectly straight to keep the line twist to a minimum. Your SB must be rolling over also. Check the alinment to see if the overhead wiring is lined up with the hook.

The above recommendations are great but just to add another suggestion to the mix is to use a line conditioner as well such as KVD Line and Lure (They are a board sponsor as well).

Are you by any chance using a spinning reel for these?  If so make sure you close the bail manually.

All spinning reels get line twist.  It is just a fact of life.

Spooling

Spool from bottom of spool onto reel if using spooling machine. If not, then have line come off spool counterclockwise and onto reel as reel lets line out clockwise and this will help reduce line twist.

Use KVD Lure and Line Conditioner, as stated above, when spooling all reels. It helps the line become more supple.

Casting

After casting a spinning reel, use your hand to set the bail.

Pull on the line from spinning reel to make it tight when starting your retrieve and if possible, hold line to rod with one hand so it will remain tight as you reel in the line onto your baitcaster.

In other words, do something to make line tight when you first start to reel in the slack after a cast.

Rigging

Use barrell swivels.

They will not interfer with most baits and they will take most of the twist out of the line.

What to Expect

Line twist, but not as bad as if you did not do the above.

Line twist comes with spinning reels so do all you can to try to reduce the line twist before it happens.

Give these suggestions a try and let us know if you see an improvement.  :(
