ok when you spool braid onto a baitcaster do you use a mono leader first? i have spooled all my baitcasters with no problem so i decide to try braid and i made my first pitch i tried reeling the lure in the handle turned but no line came in. the braid was slipping on the spool. how do you guys spool your braid on baitcasters? directly to the spool or with a leader?

Yep. You need some kind of backing. Some guys will use electrical tape around the spool shaft so the braid gets a bite. Others will spool a few yds of mono and then go with the braid. Using the mono and then braid saves on how much braid your willing to put on. Hope this helps.

And I think most would use the uniknot to join the two.

on miune i put about 30 feet of just cheap mono tie a double clinch knot and make shure your reel it on really tight.

if you dont know that knot ask some one who fly fishis and they will know

Besides tying mono line to braided line you can also apply tape to the spool so that the braided line can dig into that, correct?

Correct.  electrical tape.  maybe even friction tape, which is basically sticky cloth electrical tape.

With the high cost of braid, it is smart to use mono of the same diameter as the braid for your backing for braid on a baitcaster.

Use electrical tape to stop the braid from digging into the mono, if you wish.

I do not use electrical tape as I put about 75 yards of braid on the baitcaster and then pull another three or four arm lengths of braid for the baitcaster's spool.

This gives me more than enough braid when I fish as I use braid in pads and grass and for jigs which do not need to be casted far.

But you do what give you confidence. You can't go wrong. Maybe.  

I spooled up some Suffix on my bc and am going to try it out tomorrow.  I used black tape on the spool and am going to see how it works out tomorrow.

I think I know what you mean, but it is actually called the backing. A leader is what you tie to the end of your line and a backing at the start of the line.

There are a number of methods used. Some use just enough backing, say anywhere from 5-10 yards and fill the rest up with braid while some might do 50/50 (backing on bottom, braid on top).  It is entirely up to you to decide which will work best for your situation.

I use 30# ppro and my backing is 8# mono just to keep the diameter of the line about the same to help me better guestimate the amount of backing and braid on top that I will use.

If i dont have any mono, will the tape by itself be good. I've been using my baitcaster with braided and no backing, and the only problem I've had is my lure completley stopping in the air (with no backlash to fix), and the line snapping.

Is no backing my problem?

I've been using 8lb braid, but i took it off for 30lb Powerpro

And does the whole thing need to be covered in ape, or just a small section?

Power Pro line comes with what they call compression tape.  Put 1 piece on the spool and then tie your line on and reel it up.  Its on page 21 of the book that is attached to the back of the box with the tape.

i do a few wraps.if you want to use less braid fill the spool with tape.you only need to do thid the first time.the next refill in 5 years you just tie a uni knot.
