Strike King Rage Tail, the new buzzbait?

Featured Replies

Anyone have experience with the Rage Tail?

I saw a video of the frog rage tail and the darn thing mimicks a buzzbait with a much lesser action and more realistic.  Even the minnow looks like it would be a "finesse buzzbait" (is that a new term?)  I bet this thing would be a killer nighttime buzzer.  Think about it, frogs are active mainly during lowlight and dark conditions.

My buddy has a scum frog or something like that and he can't get a bass to hook up with it.  The bait is too hard and the hooks do not get exposed enough.  does this one have that problem?  Not a great bait if you can't hook up.

here is a link to the video.  if the link doesn't work, you can find it at ***.com

Looks like it hasn't even come out yet by the dates at ***. That or they have already sold out.

Yep due out around Thanksgiving of this year. I'm interested in those jigheads.

Wow!

If I were Zoom INC> I'd be calling my lawyers.

The front 90% of that bait is an exact replica of the horny toad.

the feet look like they are thicker and probably give more splash.

That's what my partner said.  He has a Zoom Horney Toad and can't seem to get fish to hookup on them.  He's let them run with them up to 7 seconds and still jerked it out of their mouths.

I like the action on the legs.

I've been fishing frogs a lot this year and I found a simple trick that increased my hook up ratio significantly. I'm using hookerz 5/0 corkscrew frog hooks, Horny Toads, 20 - 50 # powerpro braid, m/h rod, baitcaster.

I grab the hook right behind the barb with my needlenose pliers and bend the hook point up a few degrees. That's it! Now, the hook points slightly up instead of pointing directly back towards the coil. When I rig the frog I put the hook point just under the "skin" of the frog. So now when I set the hook it drives the hook point up, towards the bass's lip, not straight out towards the (possibly open) mouth.

We got the craw worms in at Academy yesterday  ;)

The new Rage Tail toad is definately a great bait. No other frog like it.  It really churns the water and the shad is even more agressive with unbelievable splash and noise. Keep up the good work Strike King

Well I will definately have some of these come next spring.  I found the Horney Toad hook with the cork-screw.  That's definately the only way to go.  I did the "bend the hook" thing too.  Haven't used it yet but I've got a Zoom toad in the box when the opportunity comes.

I'd really like to try that new Rage Tail shad or toad on a spring morning in clear water.  It will be something the bass around here haven't seen and it is much more realistic and more "finesse" style than a clacker buzzbait.  It just seems less threatening and more realistic.  Sometimes, that's what they want.  Other times, they want "the clacker".

i have a couple of bags of the rage tailfrog, and they do have great action. i tried them this sunday in a tourney, and caught a dink. switched over to the horny toad and limited out in about 20 minutes. this is just another great bait to add to a fishermans arsenal.

LooksLikeSinbad is 100% percent right. The 5/0 corkscrew hooks from Hookerz Tackle are great, my hook-ups with the frogs went way up. When I used to use the regular Gamakatsu Superline hooks for the buzzfrogs and horny toads and I would only get about half the fish that hit it into the boat, but when I went over to the corkscrew hooks, not only did I not have to fix the frog. I got more of the fish that hit the frog in the boat. If you try fishing the frogs with them, you will never use another hook.

amen brothers, that will help me alot..

The zoom horney toad is one of my go to lures.

My hook up percentage is pretty good, so let me tell you what I'm doing and maybe this will help.

#1 - Use a big, EWG hook.   Specifically I use an owner 5/0 riggin hook, the zoom horny toad hook, or an owner 5/0 EWG offset.

#2 - Use a stout rod.  I prefer a Loomis 804 but my St Croix 6'6" MH casting rod also works well.

#3 - No need to wait to set the hook.  This is not a hollow body frog.  When you get the strike, wait till you feel the bass' weight then slam it.

#4 - Use braided line.  Very important.  The braid slices though the weeds so you don't loose power to deflection.  Then the nearly zero stretch puts all of the energy of the strike into the hook.

#5 - Set the hook like you mean it.  I mean Cross that bad girls eyes.  There is a funny side benefit to braided line and a power hook set.

If the bass is small you will see it sail over your head.  Not recommended as a catch and release technique but a hoot none the less.

If the bass is big..................... 8-)

You crack me up Avid!

Yep, I'm going to get a reel and rig it with braid just for this bait.  It will take me a while to get used to using braid I'm sure.

*** has the Rage Tail shads on sale for 3.95 I believe.

For those that are interested. I have enough baits to fish for the first time in my stash.

The rage tail baits are versatile to say the least. Sometime the fish like it fast and furious but you can slow down your retrieve and finesse the rage tail toad and change the action all together. Often your strike rate increases as well as average size of fish. Don't have to burn'em all the time to achieve the best results.  Let the big'uns tell you how they want it!
