Should I worry about braid?

Recommended Posts

I have not used braided line yet but I am interested in trying it out. Most of the information I have read mentions the abrasiveness of braided line on rod guides. Am I going to risk damaging my rod with this line, or is this a non issue with most newer rods?

I have a Shimano Clarus I wanted to try it on first, but also have a Falcon Lowrider I may spool it on as well.

Thanks for any opinions!

Good, thanks LBH!

BTW, I believe we are fellow UPSers. I work in management at the local hub. Maybe I should make a 'business' trip up that way sometime.

;D

braid won't harm I good rod such as yours. It really only dose it with cheepy rods.

And believe once you start using braid for fishing weed, you won't want to go back to mono.  :)

Braid is awesome in heavy cover and as stated it only harms the cheaper made rods.

Later, :)

Every year or so, check your tiptop to make sure it is not grooved.  Depending on your usage, braid can get aggressive, especially on the tiptop.

There is one big difference with braid, the fact that it has no, or relatively little, stretch.  You'll notice right away how sharp strikes feel, and that is good.  However, if you are fishing for a fish as powerful and fast-striking as a king salmon, you may find the lack of stretch a problem in the stress the shock of a strike puts on terminal tackle, straightening hooks, opening split rings, etc.  I would suggest for that kind of fish having a 8-12 foot "shock leader" of mono.  Or you may just want to use mono-it is much more forgiving.

Good info from all. I plan on using Power Pro because its readily available and has been pretty well reviewed. I mainly want to try this on my spinning reel so I can reduce the line twist that mono gets... it drives me crazy.
