St Croix Mojo Bass thoughts

Recommended Posts

Saw them for the first time yesterday.  Have to say that they're not a bad looking rod.  Other than the split handle, I can't say that I see any advantage to them over a Premier.

The 6'8 M/XF spinning rod feels heavier than a 6'6 M Premier.  The reel seat on the spinners is quite nice.

The cork on the handle needs to be about an inch or so longer.  When St Croix released their first split handle rod, I knew they had shortened the cork a bit too much.  It's fine for palming, but if you don't palm your reel, it's too short.

Probably would have walked out with one of the spinning rods yesterday had there been a salesperson at the counter and had I not just bought two reels.

I just got my MBC70MHF today. This is my first split grip rod. At first glance, the handle seemed shorter than that on another 7' MH rod that I have, but it was actually about an inch longer when I compared them side by side. Must be some sort of visual trick with the split grip. The split handle fits much more nicely under my arm than a full handle does. I kind of see what you mean by the grip being too short, but I also disagree. While part of my hand does rest on the blank behind the handle when holding the rod as if I were casting, the transition is smooth and comfortable. As noted, it is a non issue when palming the reel. So far I am impressed with this rod. Now I just have to wait until the ice melts and I can go fishing to see what it really can do.

I handled a couple at BPS and I guess I'm not a big fan of the split handle.  Just didn't look and feel right.  I guess I like a lot of cork.  My next rod purchase will probably be a St Croix, just not the Mojo.

They are a decent rod for the money.  But if you spend another $40 you can get a much much better rod.

I too saw them for the first time yesterday.  I briefly handled the 7'MHC.  I gotta say, for less than bill...not too shabby.  A bit tip-heavy, but I kinda figured that even before I saw them.  For the budget-minded angler, these look like a fantastic option.  I may pick up a few for loaner rigs.  Every time I hand a TD-Z/GLX combo to a friend who doesn't fish but once every few years...well, it's tuff to watch.

Reason I bought my combo, loaner rig for tree catchers!

The only problem I'm having right now is finding them in stock. I can't seem to find them anywhere, without paying for shipping of course. TW has them but their on bo till the 4/30. I would like to catch some fish before then.

Anyone know of anywhere else to check?
