gear Ratio

Featured Replies

Can someone explain the different gear ratio settings for the baitcasters? Any recommendations for beginner baitcaster?any help will be greatly appreciated.

5:1=Slower. Better used for crankbaits

6.2:1=Medium. Good all around ratio.

7:1= High Speed. Good for flippin and pitching and carolina rigging, the high speed helps to pick up line quickly.

Basically the ratio is spool turn:Handle turn for every time you spin the handle once the inside would spin 5 times for 5:1. etc.

6.2 or .3:1 would your best bet for a beginner reel. Also, make sure you look at IPT (inches per turn). Some may have a slower gear ratio, but actually pick up more line.
