Home made line conditioner

Featured Replies

Any body make their own line conditioner ? Something like reel magic or the new KVD spray. It can't be rocket science.

Nope.

Nope, too boring.

Making home made scents is fun and it can drive the wife crazy!

May I suggest pure silicone in the spray can to condition your line?

It works just like the expensive KVD product.

Give it a try.

Silicone is petroleum based as the other 2 are not. My suspicion is that the current line conditioners are some form of glyceryn and water.Boring or not I figured all the fishermen on this board are tired of spending $8.99 for a small bottle of this stuff . I imagine someone out there (chemist ,pharmacist) would know how to make this stuff.

In KVD's book he says to use 100% pure silicone which is sold in hardware stores. He also said that mono has silicone in it and that the line will become limp and more water repellent which will be good. Apparently water in the line weakens it.

I make my own.  There are only three main components...I would share them but I will be selling my version soon.  I purchased the KVD spray and thought it worked ok...but it seemed watered down.  I was right.  Distilled water is one of the components...and the Company that makes the KVD spray is making just a little of the main ingredients go a loooong way.   I bet it casts them .50 cents to make a bottle...including the bottle.  I was a fan of reel magic for a while, but it wash off fast, and won't actually absorb into the line.  Silicone won't actually penetrate mono or fluoro...so developed a mix that I actaully soak my bulk spools of mono with.  If you leave a bulk spool in the conditioner for a few hours...it will actually expand on the spool...you see it bloated.  When it dries...the line is UV resistant, soft, and more manageable.    The conditioner does contain silicone...but it is a water based silicone.  It works better than just oiling your line...

I did not intend to step on your new project but thought I could get an idea of the ingredients for the average joe on how to get around the high cost of the .50 cent cost spray we have have been paying $8.99 for. Any insights that you want to share ?

Try Aerospace 303 protectant. In fact, compare this product to Armor-all and you will switch to 303 for car plastics, rubber, dash, and fish line.
