I know there is a relatively new Shimano support forum, which is pretty cool, so maybe this should go there but this is sort of a question for Reel Mech and idk if he visits there.  But anybody please feel free to chime in with your opinion on what could be my problem.  

So here's the deal.  I have an older (the greenish blue) Curado 200B.  Using Reel Mech's step by step book I broke it down to give it the yearly cleaning.  I have done this past years so although I'm no expert, I'm not a total noob.  The reel is in good shape and everything appeared fine.  After doing the normal oiling and greasing I put it back together, strung it up with new line and was ready to take it out fishing the next day.  I had a 1/2 oz rattletrap tied on and when I threw a cast out I heard an odd whining/whirring sound.  Thats the best way I can describe it.  The sound would last about halfway through the flight of the lure then would stop and sound normal.  If I did a short cast without much force behind it then there was no odd sound.  So my question is what is this?  Is there a part that is worn out that needs replacing or am I overlooking something very obvious?  Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

Hmmm....1st thing that came to mind would be brakes,2nd engage clutch,gasp spool w\thumb-forefinger should be no movement of spool (excess play would mean "shot" bearings and spool is rubbing frame).Hopefully someone better qualified can help more,good luck.

How much lateral play does the spool have when in free spool mode? If you can feel the spool moving laterally and hear a slight ticking sound the spool is in fact way to lose. Sometimes this will cause a whining sound. I would suspect that when you cleaned the bearing packs you didn't get all the old grease or oil out. I would re-soak the bearings again then blow them out, and let air dry for a few min. When you re-lube the bearings hold the needle noise up off of the bearing race (shield) and let a full drop of oil drip onto the bearing let this soak in for a few min. Re-assemble the bearings into the reel as you have done before, and test again.

I have one question do you have the bearing behind the drive pin on the spool shaft (SF reels) or nothing there?

Yeah the bearing is behind the drive pin.  I'm at college now but going home next weekend so I will have to give the things suggested a try and may have to resurrect the thread if my problem isn't solved
