Best line for over Dock steel dock cables

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I was just wondering what you guys option of this is. I fish alot of lake with floating dock with steel dock cables during the spawn. Some are rusty and very sharp. I have alot of probs with the bass sawing me off to fast when I cast behind the docks over the cables to the beds. They like to get back in there really deep.  I  retie often. My question is what line , test, brand, type works the best over steel cables?  TY u guys

Those are tough conditions for any line but Fluorocarbon is probably going to be your best bet.  It resists abrasion better than other lines.

Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon is your best bet because it can be obtained easily (Wal-Mart) and handles pretty nicely.

I personally wouldn't go any less that 15 or 17 pound test.

You may only be able to find up to 12 at Wal-Mart though.

In other words you're fishing Lake of the Ozarks a lot.

I've fished that lake for around 30 years. Those steel cables, especially when they've been under stress for a few years start popping and getting very rough. You'll notice the worst of them have rust setting in.

Forget braid, it slices up too easily.

Your best bet is a something like a Yozuri Hybrid or Flouro but you still need to check the line often. Those older cables are like razors (try grabbing one with your hand sometime without getting cut) and no line is meant to hold up for long after being drug over them. I use 14lb minimum, 17 is better, 20 even better but you tend to spook fish with it.
