What are the reasons I would want to have a 6' rod compare to a longer one, say 7'6" or 6'6".

I was told that it had to do with my own size, I am 5'7" but not sure how that relates to fishing. I know a longer rod can cast a lure further but other than that I don't know any other reason.

help please!

i am 5'8 and i use a

6'8 cumara casting for texas/wacky

7'0 crucial casting for crankbaits/jerkbaits

6'10 crucial casting for spinnerbaits/buzzbaits/topwater

6'8 cumara spinning for tubes/dropshotting

Ive tried bigger and smaller rods but these are the ones i like

7 footer unless you're river-fishing or you want a top-water specialty rod. My .02$ and I'm much worse of a fisherman than 90% of these guys...

Post-edit: A sub-7-footer is nice for pinpointing spinnerbaits/drop baits if you fish over-hanging brush in reservoirs in your area.

It isn't about what someone thinks you need, it is about what you're comfortable with.

Man you can really feel that extra foot or so when setting the hook w/ a lot of line out...

Especially when you're not using braid or you're in deep water, etc...

I agree with Burley, also I think the intended use needs to be considered. I do a lot of bank fishing and I like longer rods for the added leverage and longer casting.

Ive never factored height into my rod choice, Ive also never felt I needed to. I dont own a bass rod under 6'6" mostly out of preference.

According to Burley, me throwing a hudd is pretty funny though ;D

Just get whatever rod suits you.

" to 7'6" but I got a light action on a 6" and it feels funny to me.

That is a bunch of hooey, if you think your height dictates the length of rod you use.

I'm shorter than you and use 8'6" and longer rods like a jedi knight wield a lighter saber.

Bottom line comes to preference. The shorter the rod, the lighter the rod and the easier it is to fish is close and tight quarters.  This is where shorter rods can shine. Trying to fish tight quarters gets increasingly inconvenient with a longer rod. Some folks like  shorter rods when skipping lures under a dock. I am sure there are other scenarios shorter rods would do well in.

Longer rods will generally be slightly heavier but also offer improved line control and as you already know somewhat longer casts. IMHO, the casting difference between a 6'6" and a 7' rod isn't much. It just takes more effort with a 6'6" rod and less effort with a 7' rod to attain a distance for a typical cast. Try it and you will see what I mean.
