Hooks For Swimming Frogs

Featured Replies

I am looking for some good hooks to use for swimming frogs. I use horny toads and cane toads exclusively.  What do yall use?

I used Owner 5/0's last year but man those things are expensive.

I used the zoom hooks this past year. Love the screw in at the top. But I'm going to try out my Owner 5/0s on them this year. So I voted for Zoom because they were the only ones I tried.

Depending on the thickness of the frog, owner 5/0 wide gap plus, but usually a5/0 owner riggin hook.If i need a little weight on the thick stuff stanley makes a screw in frog hook with a keel type weight on the front in different sizes.(cant post a pic now,I'm at work but of course all I'm thinking about is bass LOL)

those 2 frogs that you mentioned, need 2 totally different hooks IMO. for the horny, i use a gama 5/0 and it swims perfectly. i cannot get a cane toad to swim without it turning upside down and spinning when i try it with a gama. for the cane toad, i use an owner 4/0 straight shank with a hitchhiker. that is the only way i can get the cane toad to swim right. i actually was shown how to rig a cane toad by none other than the cane toad king himself---chris lane at the gambler open house. hope this helps.

You might get some bad batches of them every now and then but... if I'm going to do it, I will go with a Gammy EWG Superline hook.

Haven't tried the screw-on type hooks yet but when you get up to that size, none of them are cheap :D...

Owner twist lock 4/0 or 5/0.

They're not cheap but they're the bees knees.

If you don't go that route, add a corkscrew to your favorite hook.  Gives you a lot of extra life out of your bait when fishing in the heavy.

I caught a lot of fish this year on the Horny toad and the Ribbit .  The zoom bait hook is acceptable but the 5/0 Owner hook with the bait keeper corkscrew on it is hands down the best hook.  A 5 pack costs $4.99 but they are sharper than anything else out there.  They either cost the same or less than the Zoom hook.  I clicked on other because want the corkscrew on my hooks.

I use Stanley Wedge V-lock hooks on the swimming frogs I fish. They're reasonably priced, sharp, and they have a spring that screws into the head of the bait.

I used to use the Zoom hook but switched over to Diachi's Copperhead hook. Pretty close in design but much MUCH sharper.

My favorite hook for these type of baits is the Mustad Ultra Lock Impact hook.  A little superglue on that plastic barb and a bait goes a long way and seldom slides off the barb.
