black max

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

i was recently looking at the black max eal and wandering if yall knew anthing about them? or what would be a good real to start with?

thanks!

My dad has a pair of the Black Max combos.  He doesnt use them often I dont think.  But I think you have the right idea.  It is an inexpensive way to introduce yourself to baitcsting.  However I think you will find yourself wanting to upgrade fairly soon.  For around 60 bucks out the door its not a bad deal I just think you will find its more or less a functioning piece of plastic.

I have one left on a "beater" set-up for pond fishing. They are great reels especially for the price! They are smooth, cast a mile and very strong. You can get them or the SilverMax on Ebay dirt cheap. I would recommend the Revo S as a starter reel honestly.

I had a Black Max for a year, and the anti-reverse went bad.  The Revo S or the Citica is a better starter reel.

I've got a Black Max that I've had for about 6 years. Nice small reel. However, if I don't keep spraying the insides with WD-40, the reel won't cast worth a darn!

A reel tech once said it was because of the lack of decent bearings (it uses a bushing instead of a ball bearing on the end spool) and too tight a fit (?). Once it's "warmed" up a bit, it'll work ok though. Much prefer any of my Ambassadeur 5500Cs.

Maybe I just got a bad one?
