MagTouch

Recommended Posts

Have any of you guys tried Cabela's magtouch rod? I was thinking of trying one out for a not-yet-purchased bait casting reel. I'd be ordering online so I can't actually feel it. Anyone have any input?

Sorry I can't post a link yet...

Oh and is there a reason not to get a two-piece rod? It's half the price of the single piece.

I have the Cabelas Mag Touch in a 2 pc model and I like it very much. Its a good sturdy rod and nice and  great sensitivity. I have a 2 pc spinning model and I haven't had any issues with it getting wet and being slippery.  The handle may take some getting used to since it's not as thick as a rod with a cork handle but other than that its a very good rod and even better at the sale price.

Is this the one with the graphite handle? If it is I can tell you that they feel good in my hands. The handles feels on the "skinny" side, but that is probably because I have been accustomed to the feel of cork. This thinner feel will suit medium and smaller hands.

I feel like a fool for not buying one at $49 when they went on sale back in december. I would have gotten a 2-piece casting rod.

They also look great. I think our fellow member ghost could throw in a couple of thoughts about this rod.

Thanks for the responses guys.  They actually have a 2pc. model on sale now if you want to pick one up.   At least online.

is the 2pc a bad choice for a bait caster for some reason?

I have always had 2 pc B/C rods for the ease of traveling since I don't have a boat and fish from the shore. I think when u get into the better made rods as people have said on other posts the difference in sensitivity and feel is less noticeable. I have a Fish Eagle II and a XMLTi that are my 2 pc B/C rods but just added an XML 1 pc with the Cabelas sale that hasn't arrived yet.

yeah i don't have a boat either and I would probably get a 7 ft. model which would be a pain to bring in my car.

wees,

I want a two piece for the convenience of keeping the rod in the trunk.  I never leave my one piece rods in the car exposed for thieves to see when my car is unattended.

I do not think a 2-piece casting rod is bad at all and I have a few.  I am going to check to see the price of the discount. Thanks!

The loss in sensitivity for 2-piece vs. 1-piece is there but IMHO insignificant and negligible for my fishing needs. I mean, for me, even an ugly stick is sensitive in my hands.  ;D

I think your bait monkey is telling you it's time to pick one up. :)

Sweet! Actually, I didn't realize this but there is a Cabela's about 40 minutes away from my house -- must be new. I'm definitely heading there tonight and will probably pick up that rod if all goes well.

Now all I need is to pair it with a decent beginner bait caster

If you can print out the page from the internet to show to the clerks there so they can price match from the site. Sometimes the prices on the site are not reflected in the store and the Prodigy B/C is nice and I think its on sale also for $75 and normally $100.

I called my local cabela's and they are already flat out of all their mag touches. However, I asked if I could avoid shipping charges by having it shipped to the store and the guy said yes, so that is what I will have to do. Glad I did. It saves me the 45 minute drive and shipping costs.

You might want to call your store to make sure they have your model in stock.

i tried two of them and found their handles to be too small and i had to dip them in the water sometimes because they get really hot in the sun. i think they're a little on the heavy side too. you can always order it and give it a shot. you have 60 days to return it no questions asked and all it will cost you is $7.50 in shipping (using the included return shipping label).

personally, i think you'd be much better off with one of cabela's XML rods that are currently on sale. the prices on their technique-specific rods are downright ridiculous. the 6'10" pitchin' model is pretty versatile.

I agree with you bout calling to check and see if they have them in stock since they have been on clearance for awhile now.

I just ordered the XML and also had it shipped to the store to pick up and total cost $32.09 for the 6'6" MH worm/jig rod

Okay thanks for the advice.  I'll have to check out the XML rods also.  I see online that some of the models have HUGE savings.

Yeah the XML technique specific rods are still on sale at HUGE savings but last week they were basically all at those discount prices. You can order one of those and have it shipped to the store and only pay the taxes on it.

They are great rods and love the Cabelas warranty

????  I can fit several 6'6" to 7' rods in my '91 Infiniti w/ room to spare.

Fortunately, I have a crew cab Ram and can put 7'6" rods in the cab with a little finageling. Since we are talking about the XML rods on sale I will comment on what a great rod these are. I bought the 6'2 MF BC rod on sale and it costed me $56 with shipping. I took this rod down to Georgia over the holiday weekend and it handled 3 and 4 pound LMB's with ease. That rod is definitely worth the $130 they originally asked for it, but I will definitely be buying more than one if they ever do this rediculous low price sale again---err... I mean when they do this sale again. With BPS Iwould never pay full price for a "brand rod" but the XML is definitely worth it.

I now have 6 of the XML rods all of which I purchased at sale prices way below the original $139. The rods are worth the $139 and Cabelas does stand behind there rods with the warranty. The latest rod for me as I have said is a 6'6" MH worm/jig 1pc which should fit into my Chevy Blazer without a problem and it is my first 1 pc rod. I landed a couple of small LMB on my XML ML setup the other day without a problem. They are great rods and the sale price makes them even a better deal

For me, it's not an issue of fitting in my car (Corolla) because you are right. They fit easily.  The challenge is that while they fit, they will be exposed in full sight and plain view to every would be thief if not hidden in the trunk. I might be anal, but I WILL NEVER ever leave my rods in the car exposed even for a minute. The price of having to going through fixing a broken car window and replacing stolen fishing gear is one I'd rather not pay. Granted, they can be stolen from the trunk, but they will have had to do some serious breaking to get to and loss of those rods is far easier to swallow.

The purpose of my two piece rods are to serve me as "trunk" rods that stay in the car to fish on the fly, pardon the pun.

It is on the weekends I that would bust out my one-piece rods. :)

I checked their site earlier today and the XMLs are no longer at the $29 price. :'( Also, only one model of the Magtouches is still $49.99.

Yeah looks like they pulled them off clearance today cause I check the site last night and all the technique specific rods were still on clearance.

Too bad cause I did want the spinnerbait rod but my worm/jig rod is in and I'll be picking it up today

I was lucky I guess as I got the worm/jig rod also for 29.99.  I'm waiting for it to arrive at the store.  I almost waited until today to order.  I'm glad i didn't.

I saw the magtouch when I went to the store yesterday.  I thought it was a pretty decent rod.

How often do they have these sales?  The savings are unbelievable....

Wees,

The last time I saw the Mags at that same $49 price, it was December. Now that it is July, I am willing to bet the sale appears to be about every 6 months. :)

I picked up my worm/jig rod yesterday and they gave me the protective tube and rod sleeve which was a nice touch. I pulled the rod out to mount my Quantum Accurist PT on it and noticed the rod is a Heavy and not a MH as advertised on the site. The rod feels pretty good but I would have preferred the MH over the Heavy.

They usually have the sale when they are bringing out a newer model of the rods or discontinuing a rod.

ChiCityBasser,

I too bought the Worm/Jig rod during the clearance and mine was H instead of MH as well.  I think it's a misprint on their site because I thought it odd that the lure weight on these rods was 3/8-2oz yet all the other MH's are rated for slightly lighter lures.  Nonetheless, while I was disappointed at first, I really like the rod for my heavier soft plastics and jigs and it even makes a great short distance spinnerbait rod.

Like everyone else though, after buying the worm/jig and finesse flipping rod, with that awesome clearance I now feel I should have added a couple more to my order!  Oh well, there's always next time.
