Penn 920 Levelmatic as Crankin reel

Featured Replies

Anyone else doing this ? I do not have a designated Cranking reel at least not one with the right gear ratio. I had a gold 920 laying around and since it has a 4:1 retrieve ratio and is in very good shape I thought I'd give it a shot. Work pretty nicely.

Cast well, feels smooth and the low ratio is just what the doctor ordered. I've got it on a Kistler Graphite Plus cranking rod . . . .

Dude.. You had your post up for two hours..

I never really thought of Penn as a freshwater reel. But I'm looking at section 3.4-9 of the fishing handbook and it says nothing against it.

Is it bulky?

Bulky ? By today's standards ~ yes, it's 11.0 oz and as a round reel you can't "palm it" But it's not over sized or cumbersome. I'm becoming a believer. Besides, it makes me feel kind of old school.

btw Dude, you are really up on that handbook ;)
