Loomis 101

Featured Replies

Can somebody please give me a quick rundown on the differences between the different Loomis models? I am in the market for a new T-Rig and smaller jig rod (less than 1/2oz). I am looking at the GL3, IMX, and Mossyback. For the GL3 and IMX I am looking at 7ft 1/4-3/4. For the Mossyback I am looking at 7'1" 3/16-5/8.

I used a Mossyback in the past and really liked it, but I am not sure how these other two models stack up against the Mossyback.

Also, this rod will be used for saltwater fishing too.  It will be used for speckled trout in 15-20 ft of water.  We use 3/8 or 1/2 oz jigs with a paddletail minnow for this type of fishing.  "Inshore rods" do not cut it for this type of fishing because their action is way too moderate and flimsy.  We use MH bass rods so we can feel the light bite in deeper water.  I am currently using a Dobyns 704C for this application, which is great for 1/2oz, but I want something a touch lighter for the 3/8oz.

Thanks folks

the bcr's come in the glx model and the mossyback model...the mossyback model is a proprietary blend, long suspected on many boards as a mix of imx and gl3.

if i'm reading your post right, you're looking at either the mbr843 imx/gl3 or the bcr853...in my hands, 3/8 oz. pretty much nails the sweet spot with either rod.

that said, the 843 is a fast action...the 853 is an extra fast action which, again in my hands, would handle the occasional 1/2 oz. a tad better.

ymmv.

do a search for loomis imx on these forums. i'd say they're the best value in the loomis rods. glx's are lighter, a little more sensitive and considerably more expensive.

go for imx. check out their warranty if you havent already.

Glad to see that 704c is getting a workout. ;)

Oh yeah I am wearing it out

Any of the blended rods like Mossyback, Bronzeback, etc; can use any of the graphite that Loomis makes. Some rod models may have GL2, GL3, IMX and GLX along with some glass tossed in.

They use the different materials to make the best possible action for the technique the rod was designed for. If the blank responds better with a blend of IMX and GLX then that is what it will be built from.

Straight from the horse's mouth.
