sardine attractant

Featured Replies

I read a bassmaster article that said you can soak your plastics in the liquid from sardine cans instead of buying expensive attractant. Anyone do something like this?

Nope, but it makes sense.

Anything natural should be better then anything with an artificial oil base.

Remember, according to Dr. Keith Jones, bass cannot smell oil based products.

I use Dr. Jones' secret formula which is excellent.  Messy but really good.

Sorry, I don't share it.

Dr.Jone's theroy doesn't hold water. Because crawfish and baitfish both have a lot of thier nutrients and odors in their fatty tissue cells. His theroy is convient to sell a product! I use anise oil, I have no idea if the fish can smell it or even if it helps, I mam so used to using it that this year I am going to not use it. My suspisions are that scent is more to catch fishermen than it is to catch fish. I would love to hear from Raul on this thread.

Hey Muddy,

Glad you are up this early and online.

All I am saying is what Dr. Jones said in his book and when I spoke with him.

We can just do as we think is correct until we get more scientific data to support the use of an oil based scent one way or the other.

And you are right. Scents are used to catch us fishermen but there must be something to them, other than a confidence builder.

I know a catfish can "smell and taste" attractants as they are one big tounge.  I really wish we knew more about what a bass or other game fish can smell and taste.

Time will tell.

That makes 2 of us Sam! I am under a lot of pressure at work, sleep has been sporatic! I have been reading some bass biology, and I am going to have to get with some of the more knowledable fellas. There is info that is confusing, becuse sometimes it is contirdictory, or more than likely I am reading it wrong.

Sardines in fresh water? :)

Might as well soak your baits in a can of tuna.

If I do that I'll be eating them.

Mmmmmmm...canned tuna.

I gotta confess T Rig, been there and done that! We were fisihing a real slow day, we had tuna heros in the cooler and I took some tuna out and put a Zoom Trik worm in it for a while, the only thing i attracted was flies

You can't eat Zoom plastics and tuna.  The salt would kill me.

Actually there was an interesting contrast between the crunchiness of the onions and celery and the pliability of the worm, it did leave behind a salty after taste on ones palate however! ;D ;D

Forget salt pills, all you need in the summer is half a trick worm between cheek and gum for long lasting satisfaction.

Boy did this get high jacked Started with Sardines as an attractant now we are on Hillbilly Dietary   Suplements

lol

Something else I was just thinking to consider is catch some bluegill or crawfish, add a little water, put em in a blender, and you've got your attractant to soak you plastics in

after reading Muddymans post I soaked some bait in anus oil

smelled like crap.
