Browning Round Reel (midas 6L)

Recommended Posts

The other day I made a bid on a Browning reel on ebay and got it.

Reel came today and it cast good and drag seems to hold good.  Deceided to set the brake a little to see if I could throw it a little farther.

I don't see a brake adjustment on it.

What am I missing??  Anyone got any experience with these?

Across the top it has a plate that say MIDAS and under that 6 bearing system.  I can't find a model number or anything else except on the bottom it says "made in Japan".

Don't know what I got, but it seems to work good.

Thanks for any information you have!

Open the side plate opposite the crank and look for a centrifugal brake. It would similar to a brake shoe inside a drum with 6 or so magnets that slide out and slow the reel. Each magnet can be clipped down to lock in place rendering them inoperable. If the side plate has no screws it may twist open, probably not easily if it's never been opened. The eBay seller may also have some info. Good luck! Let us know how you make out.

Just a little update on the Browning reel.

It has two thumb screws on the handle side that go all the way thru and screw into the plate on the other side and hold it on.  I was trying to unscrew the side plate.

The brakes are under the plate.

I have two of those.  In tearing them down for cleaning I found that the insides appear to be identical to a Quantum Iron other than a couple of extra bearings.  They've been decent reels for the past 15 yrs, but I'm ready to replace them this spring.
