spinning rod for top water

Featured Replies

What size spinning  rod should i get to use for top water, mostly plugs and on the smaller size.I use sammys and some frogs too. This rod will sett up just for top water and fishing mostly smallmouthes .Thanks! :)

Frogging will be tough with a spinning setup, both with hooksetting and powering a fish back to the boat.

Otherwise, for small topwater plugs and smallie fishing, I would go with a 6' 6" or a 7' ML or M power rod.  Personally, for smallies I use a 7' 6" ML rod, but thats too long to be ideal for fishing topwater plugs, because those generally work best when the action is given with the rod tip low to the water.

Any 7' H/mod-fast spinner will do.  Topwater doesn't require any sensitivity.

Froggin will require a different rod, but for topwater i'd go with a 7 or 7'6" M or ML.  I throw topwater on an avid 7'6" ML with 14lb fireline and LOVE IT

I have a Compre' 6'-3" M/ML rod.  The rod tapers from the handle down to the tip so, ton of back bone and hook set power!  I use flukes, 1/4 oz. spooks, Pop-rs, etc.  Can launch a lure a mile with 8lb line!  Not sure if this size is still made or not by Shimano
