Wacky Hook

Featured Replies

New to wacky rigging, however need help deciding on a hook size.

Any information would be greatly appreciated, and I have ran the search function with not much for specific information.

Thanks for your time,

Steve

I use the Gammy hook made for GYCB in a size 4 for 5" Senko style baits. Called a GYCB Split shot hook.

Perfect size and the hooks are strong. I go down to a size 6 if I'm fishing slim senko style baits or 4" senko styles.

Try not to set the hook hard either. Just reel in and the hook will lodge itself in the corner of the fishes mouth. The hooks are very sharp and will penetrate just fine.

One of the writers for Gary Y's site also agrees.

Good article that you should read.

I'm cheap when it comes to hooks, I use the same X-point 3/0 and 4/0 EWG hooks for everything but dropshot.

I use either a #1, a 1/0 or a 2/0 when fishing wacky.

The 1/0 and 2/0 are weedless and they work great.

I actually fish a 3/0 Owner Wide Gap Plus hook.  It is a heavier hook than some use for this technique but I also probably fish my wacky rigged senkos differently too.  I typically fish them in more of a power technique than some people do.  I use a casting rod 6'10" MH with 12-20lb fluro (depending on cover/ size fish).  The heavy weight of the hook causes the bait to fall faster and (IMO atleast) have more side to side wobbling action.

1/0 I find it to be perfect size for the fish in the lakes I fish.
