my rod says the prefered line test is 14-20lb. does that mean 55lb braid which is the equivilent to 10lb mono diameter, is too light? sorry if this is a dumb question

The rated line, is a Guide..I have a rod rated 10-20, and I use 55 # braid w/o any problems. I have used 6lb on another rod rated for 10-20  same deal.. ;)

In theory, too light a line could break before the rod loads up and too heavy could break the rod. I'm not aware of diameter being a factor. At any rate, when using a line that much heavier than the rating, ease up on the drag to protect the rod.
