Ive been bass fishing for about 4 years and I still am always unsure on what rod specs to get. Im looking into getting the St. Croix Mojo Bass rod and am just looking for a rod with the broadest range of techniques I can use it for. Right now im looking at getting the 6'6" MH Fast rod but I wanted a second opinion? Can't give you an opinion based on experience...yet. But I can give you the advice I was given when I asked about an all-around rod.

Almost everyone (maybe everyone?) suggested a 6'6" to 7" MH with Fast action. I bought 2, an Airrus Ultra XL and Fenwick Techna AV, both 7 footers. Seven foot by accident, not design. Just happened to be good deals. These seem like real long rods to me as I was an ultralight fisherman years ago before I quit fishing. The first is suppose to be very good at handling crankbaits, swimbaits, buzzbaits, spinners and some top water lures.

The Fenwick is suppose to be a more sensitive rod which does well with jigs, and I am hoping with plastics in pads and weeds. Information on this rod is a bit sparse, but those who have used it seem to think highly of it for its price range. (Believe it has been discontinued, so the few rods you can find are way below MSRP.)

Wait a bit, and I'm sure someone with actual experience with the Mojo will chime in. Good luck with your decision. Everything I've read the past month while researching leads me to believe your choice is a good one.

I agree. A MH power fast action rod (6'6 or 7') is about as close as you are going to get to a all around rod. Good Luck

A few in my collection make great "all around rods". One is an All Star 'team all star', 6'9" in length, line wt. 8-17 lb.- lure wt. 1/4 to 5/8, fast-medium. Great feel, perfect sensitivity. The model number is TAS815WW. I use it for the smallish sized swimbaits, but can see it would work as a worm rod or topwater. Heck, i bet i could toss small jigs in open water with it.

Cool Im really just looking for something I can use with like soft plastic swimbaits/worms/topwater/a few jigs. Im not sure if my listed rod fits into that.

I also wanted to add that the reel ill be using is a Citica 201D with a 6.2:1 Gear Ratio. Hope that helps

6' 6" - 7' MF is best for the broadest range of techniques, if you're including light to med sized crankbaits and soft plastics, as well as 1/4 - 1/2 oz spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and buzzbaits, light Texas rigs and jigs, etc.  You can easily toss lures ranging from 3/16 - 5/8 oz with it.

If you're not frequently going to be tossing lures that are 1/4 oz and under, than a 7' MH will be your best bet. 

Thanks thats exactly what I was looking at and I now have made up my mind.

If I were you, I'd go with a 7' foot rod, just for the distance in casts and the control. You can also handle a little heavier baits.

But I also need to be able to handle the lighter baits like my jigs and my worms.

If you need both then the 6' 6" is great.

Lols I thought I was gona have to wait 3 weeks to get this but I just struck the loto and found an old un cashed 125$ check. Im going to dicks tonight and seeing what I can get.

To throw "lighter" lures/baits, the rod needs to load up..a stiff tip won't do that. It's my experienec that the Shimano rods are usually rated for less weight than they can actually handle..so a mf might be something to look at, The Clarus, or Crucial depending on your budget.

Okay but Im going to be looking at anything in dicks. Im thinking still maybe the mojo or a team daiwa. But if they have them Ill look at what you suggested. Im also gona pick up some soft plastic swimbaits to go with my new setup. Any other suggestions?

I have a team Diawa, mf..good allaround rod imho..

just going to throw this out there, but I was really disappointed by the Mojo, considering how much hype it got. felt really unbalanced with my revo stx, and also was not nearly as sensitive as I thought it would be. I'd go with a Compre over a Mojo any day.

I have this Mojo and I love it! It's indeed a great all around rod, I have caught LM and stripers up to 22#'s on this rod! I have 2 Avids in the same size/action and I find myself fishing the Mojo more :-/ Get ready, the first time I set the hook, a 2#er came flying out of the water, talk about backbone! It is heavier than the avid but it feels good with my old Procaster 100 Se its green so i call this combo "the incredible hulk" ;D

Thank you all for your input. At dicks I had to decide between the skeet reese or the Mojo. I chose the mojo after much deliberation. I already slapped my 201D Citica on it and spooled it up! Cant wait to try it tomorrow.
