Need some help on new rod/reel purchase.

Recommended Posts

This morning I headed to BP to exhange a broken Crucial and somehow ended up walking out of there with a new shimano cumara 7'2" mh/xf paired with a shimano core 100mg. I dont know a whole lot about pairing rods for certain lures but I think I bought the wrong rod for the duties i will be applying it to. I was planning on using this setup for T-rigs and jigs up to 1/2 ounce. I was out in the pond today with a 1/4 bits bug and was trying to get used to the xf tip and was wondering. Would I have been better off for the mh/f? I mostly fish less than 15ft water with moderate to sparse cover. What are yalls suggestions?

Personaly I like XF tips. I held that rod at a fishing show, and it's sweet. It's all personal preference.

I really like the whole setup, for some reason it seems almost the same action as my crucial mh/f just a littler differnet feel. I am just used to fishing my crucials for so long its just a different feeling when I get a bite and set the hook. I will say te rod has a ton of power tp be so light.

It is the same power.  The action is different.

Yeah Im a moron.I meant action. But what would be the advantages/disadvantages of the exta fast tip opposed to the fast?

Advantages- Sensitivity and the quick transition to backbone.  It is stiffer, so it will send vibration to your hand more intensely.  The best applications are single hook presentations (worm, jig) where you need sensitivity to detect a bite, then a lot of power to drive the hook set.

Disadvantages- The Extra-Fast tip works against you while fighting the fish. Since the tip rebounds quickly, it is very hard to keep the right pressure on the fish to keep the lure secure. Too much or too little tension on the fish can allow them to throw the bait.

That would explain why I lost a few fish this afternoon from them throwing the hook more than I was used to.
