time to upgrade...

Featured Replies

Well hello everybody, new to the forum and glad i joined it.

As its getting warmer and warmer out i have been going fishing everyday after school at the local dam, and since i have had my Shakespeare xteara since i was 10 i decided its time to upgrade.

i posted this to ask what kind of rod would be best for me, i mainly bass fish but sometimes ill go trout fishing too.

i was looking piecing together something using a shakespeare Deceiver spinning reel (6.2:1 ratio) but as far as the rod goes im looking at a uglystick fresh water rod...

i mainly need to know if this would be a good overall setup or if theres any better setups i could use for a multi purpose rod..

thanks

i was planning on spending about $150-$200... i kinda like the specs on that reel but can anybody tell me if the gear ratio is a solid ratio or if i should stick to a lower ratio, and if 10 bearings makes any difference from something that a 5 or  6 bearing reel

Personally, I would go to an aluminum framed spinning reel. You can get into a Shimano Sahara for around 75 bucks, a Daiwa Exceler for about the same, a Pflueger Medalist for about 80 bucks, or an Abu Garcia Cardinal 500 for about 60 bucks. I think you would be happier in the long run with an aluminum bodied reel, and any of these would serve you well.

That gear ratio (5.X-1) is fairly typical for spinning reels, and will suit you fine in most applications.  Bearing count can be misleading.  The best thing to do is put it in your hand and see what it feels like.  IMO fewer quality bearings in the key places will be better than 10 bearings of lower quality.

My recommendation would be the the 2500 size Sahara.

These two would be good options in your listed price range, depending on your preference for cork, or not- or split grip or not.
