Headlamps

Featured Replies

I need to get a new headlamp, and need some help. I am not sure what color of light to get. I am fairly certain that I don't want a white light, but I am not sure if green or red would be better. I know that red is better for night vision but but green seems to offer the best solution for being able to discern colors.

Does anyone have one or the other that they can comment on?

Easy answer here. Get a TACTIKKA XP by Petzl It comes in a few variations but it has 4 colored lenses. Red, green, blue and clear. Its interchangable so you can see which you like the best. If you decide on a certain color then you can always leave that lense on.

Water resistant, easy on switch, lightweight, and uses tripple a's.

Cost will run about 40-80 dollars depending on variant. Heres the link with some info on it.

If you want to see the most, get green since your eyes are the most sensitive to green. If you don't want wildlife to notice and don't want your night vision messed up, dark blue/purple and red are the best colors.

I like the $10 generic ones just fine. The biggest problem i have is it is impossible to switch the red on and off without cycling through the brights also.

Anybody know of a red only headlamp on the cheap?

The Energizer 6 LED is a great light for night fishing. Has 4 lighting modes, one of them being red.

I have this one, it's a great light for the price, but I don't like the fact that you have to cycle through all of the modes to get to the red light.

Yea cycling through all the colors would defeat the purpose of a green or red light at night.  Once it hits white, your going to lose your night vision.

This is the one I use:

It's tremendous.  Has white and red lights, and a lever so you can adjust the brightness.  I almost always use the red on the lowest power and it's enough light to tie knots and unhook fish easily.  I use the bright white when I'm walking through the woods to get to my spot.  Have used it for several hours on the same batteries and it's showing no signs of needing new batteries yet.

Unless you're pointing the thing in your face, the light isn't going to hit your eyes.

I use Cap Lights in white not worrying about it harming my night vision since I'm fishing not flying a fighter jet; the effects on your night vision will only last for a couple minutes.
