Do you use tape and mono to back up the line or just use mono?

I use the arbor knot to tie the mono backing to the spool.

Then I use an albright or uni knot to combine the mono and the braid. I use a ratio of about 50% mono backing and 50% super line on top.

I don't use tape because I occassionally encounter species that can spool my reels.  Using the knot gives me somewhat of a fighting chance but using tape would give me no chance.

I suppose I would use that tape connection if I battled only bass, trout and panfsh only but I don't.

I totally agree, that you should tie a albright or a uni knot. You never know what might hit you lure when your fishing for bass. I've had stripers hit my lures and they can definitely stripe all of your line off.

i use stretchy gauze tape on the spool , just a little bit to cover the spool , then tie an arbor knot with the braid and spool it up ( i use a full spool of braid on my reels ) below is the type of guaze tape i use .....

I tape the mono to the spool with a 1/2" wide strip of electrical tape, spool it up about 60% with cheap 10lb mono, and use a Double Uni to connect mono to braid.

It's not necessary to tape nylon lines to the spool, only braid, but I do it anyways.

I use the Power Pro compression tape that comes with the line.  Then tie it directly to the spool.

on my heavy tackle rod which is a round reel which has a lot of line capacity so i spool it up 50% with either older or cheapo line as filler than put my fireline on
