I try to buy all my fishing gear while its on sales or discounted when i can unless its what i really want.

When i first tried baitcasting i purchased a cheap baitcasting reel and rod to try it.  I even purchased a video to watch about it too.  I was doing this for many years while saltwater fishing with the open reels but the fresh water reels have bells and whistles that i didn't know about.  I purchased a reel on sale for about $12.  It had the magnetic brake and the friction knob and i learned how to bait cast with it.  Its up to you on what you want to spend for the first time too.

There are a lot of combos in that price range. Most places have a couple of their "house" brand combos under $100. Abu has a pretty good one also!

I think you already bought your rod because of your backlashing thread but in case someone else reads this...

Quantum Bill Dance Select Combo - my first baitcaster and I still use em!

I know everyone will have a different opinion, but if I only had a hundy to spend I would much rather get a nice spinning reel with a decent rod. I think the selection for that price range is way better for spinning setups than baitcasting setups.

I recently purchased my first baitcasting reel and while it retailed for $130 I picked it up significantly cheaper. Even at that price point, I find it frustrating at times because I can set the brake perfect so that the bait slowly falls and stops when it hits the ground and then 5 casts later I could need to set it again. Its not always like this, but they are very touchy and getting one dialed in is a challenge in itself.

If you can stretch that budget another $15 you could pick up a BPS Pro Qualifier reel for about $80 and a Berkely Lightning Rod for about $35.

Love that second cabelas combo link. If I had the money I'd be all over that for my swimbait/frog/crank rod
