which rod?

Featured Replies

hello everyone

my cousin is just now getting back into fishing, and he needs some help choosing a rod. he wants to spend right at 150 dollars. he told me he has been doing alot of research and is looking at a few rods,

1. powell max

2. dobyns savvy

3. st croix avid (worth the extra 20 dollars?)

im going to see if i can help him by getting yall's opinion. he wants a all around MH rod. any other suggestions would help

GOD BLESS

I have fished the Powell Max and I have several St Croix Avids.

I love my Avids, and would be my top choice.

I have never fished a Dobyns, so I can not vouch for them. I can tell you that David P is a huge Dobyns fan, and would give you a ton of info on the rods if you would want to PM him.

I have several Avids and love them, I also have a couple Falcon Cara T7s and they are also outstanding rods.

Later, :)

Savvy Series, but let us know what he's looking to use the rod for so we can help him pick the right model.

thanks guys! i know he will appreaciate all the help! he wants a all around rod, but i think mostly he throws like texas rigged stuff, and some cranks here and there

Between those 3 options it's more important to have the right power and action than the right brand & model. Can't lose with any of them :)

To fish both T-Rigs & Cranks on the same rod, some compromises will need to be made. A medium fast may be stressed throwing heavy jigs or pulling a hawg out of heavy cover, but it should do well with weightless plastics, lighter T-Rigs and cranks in open water & moderate cover situations. A Medium Heavy extra fast will help him to drive a T-Rigged heavy hook through the lip of a big bass, but may not have enough give to prevent him from ripping a treble hook out of a fish's mouth.

I agree with everything LAO162 said.

x2

I think I would go with the Medium Fast action for an "all around rod"

if you were going to spend the extra money i would get a falcon T7
