Fluorocarbon question?

Featured Replies

I'm going to try fluorocarbon line for the first time on my baitcaster but I have a quick question. Do I spool it direct or do I use a mono backing like you do with braid? I appreciate the help! :)

no you can spool it directly to your spool although a lot of people use it as a leader for braid. i spool my braid straight to the spool as well never had a problem as well as fluorocarbon

Cool! Thanks for the info!

Personally, I always use mono backing when spooling with fluorocarbon.  Really, for no other reason than it saves me money.  Fluoro, especially the better brands (made in Japan) can cost some serious cash.  Don't know which brand you're planning on going with, but I would recommend sticking with some proven brands like Seaguar or Sunline.  BPS Fluoro is a good cheaper alternative that I use a lot.  Good luck!!

Yeah, I see no reason to fill a spool with expensive fluoro when half the spool will never see the light of day.  The only line I don't use some backing for is 15-20 lb mono.

It depends to some extent on the diameter fluorocarbon I'm going to be using.  Thinner diameter allows me to use more backing.  But, in general somewhere around 1/3 to 1/2 the spool.  I tend to use closer to 1/3 a lot because I'm making very long casts at times.

Some good advice. Use backing for all lines and save yourself some money for good line.  I even go so far as to measure new line with a line counter when I spool it on, then write how much I used on the spool of new line.  Amazing how much line you can get from a new spool of line with some careful planning on backing and new line.
