Shimano Bantam for cranking applications

Featured Replies

I have a couple Shimano Bantam reels(Bantam 10XSG & Bantam Mag 10XSG) I have been using this season with soft plastics. I must say I like these reels. Im fully aware that these arent for heavy duty applications, but I was wondering how these reels would handle small crankbaits that go to the 7-10 ft range.(something like a small Manns 10+ crankbait)

What about other baits, like a 1/4 oz Chatterbait?

I know the gear ratio leaves a little(or alot) to be desired, anyone use these for cranks and spinnerbaits(chatterbaits)? How do they perform?

Is everyone that uses these reels satisfied with the gear ratio,or do they not have enough of a gear to provide the optimum action and speed to a bait.

Do these baits wear you out after using them all day cranking?

My friend has a Bantam Curado on a Carrot Stix for cranking its throws great and I and him really like it. Im getting a Bantam soon so I dunno what ill use it for but good luck!

The (Bantam 10XSG & Bantam Mag 10XSG) were manufactured in the 1980's and are discontinued reels (no parts available).

At that time they were used mostly for light weight spinnerbaits and worming techniques.

The gear ratios were in the 5.1:1 and the gears (especially the pinion) will wear out quickly in a cranking setup..

I would recommend that you look at the reels of today to use in your cranking endeavors.

Good Luck & Tight Lines!
