punching?

Featured Replies

Going to be getting a punching rod and have narrowed it down to 2 rods. 1. dobyns champion 805 flip/punch. 2. Dobyns extreme 795 flip. I know the extreme has better sensitivity but is it that much better than the 805? I will be punching heavy mats. And ill be fishing from shore. If tht makes a difference.I would like to know about each rod and whicg onw would be better suited for me? Thanks!

I have both. It really comes down to how thick of cover you're punching. I know a few guys that do punch with the 795 without problems, but there are also a few situations I would only use the 805.

The sensitivity is certainly better with the 795.

I use 80lb braid on my 805 and 25lb fluoro on my 795 (I mostly flip heavy cover with the 795 but I don't physically punch the nastiest stuff with it).

If you're ever in Walnut Creek, you're glad to check them both out with reels mounted. Just shoot me a PM.

thanks david for the quick response. i will be punching heavy cover on the delta. and some of the bay area lakes. so i think the 805 will work better. i dont drive so i wouldnt be able to get to walnut creek but thanks! what reels do you like on the 805?

Shoot me a PM a day or two in advance when you head up to the Delta. I have  a few tournaments coming up and will be out there several days for the next 3 weeks.

The 805 is certainly my choice for the Delta, and I use the 795 for lakes and some lighter stuff. But the 805 is the sure bet.

I personally have a Curado E7 on mine now, but have had the drag slip a bit with some fish. I had Revo STXs on all of my reels for almost 2 years and love them. I got a deal on Curado E7s that let me get brand new reels for the price of my old STXs, so I did it, but I still think the STX is a step up. The drag alone is a winner in my books.

okay cool i will do that. and yeah i love the stx! last rod i had in mind which i didnt mention was the dobyns 766. im 6'4 and i can handle the 805 pretty easily. i just mentioned the 766 cause my local tackleshop runs out of the 805 quite often.

Some guys like the 766 for punching, but I really prefer the 805 over the 766. I like the added length, the  805 is a beast!
