Setting up a Revo S

Featured Replies

It's my son's birthday today so he has a new All Star/Revo S combo present and he loves it. My question is how do i set the weights on the reel? I have always used a spinning reel and don't know squat about baitcasters. I found out how to loosen the screw to get the sideplate off and reveal the weights but what should i set them to. Are they on when they're pulled out or in? I would be grateful for some advice as i want to take him out to the local lake this morning.

They are "on" if they are out.  Make sure you do it in opposite matching pins so it is balanced.

Also, make sure you adjust the cast control knob so that the lure drops very slowly at first.  You can loosen it so it drops faster after he gets better.  Same with the brakes - you can put more on (i.e. 4) and reduce over time as he gets better.

Revos should have the cast control cap (the small knob on the same side as the crank handle) set so that you have to shake the rod tip a bit to get the bait to drop. Any looser and chances for a backlash increase.

People who complain about Revos backlashing often overlook this adjustment. They set the knob so the bait drops under it's own weight. That can be too loose for this reel.

what a sweet set up for a birthday present. The Revo S was my first real reel. shouldn't take too much adjusting, just practice.

I own four of them, it is all I use.  I run mine with just one brake on but you might want to try two until you get the hang of it.  Once you do you can set it to one brake and cast a country mile.  They are awesome reels in my opinion.  They cast light stuff really well also.

Good luck!

Thanks guys for the all the replies. We went out to our favourite spot on Sunday and he did very well with it. Only 4 backlashes all day. The Revo reel is really a star.Unfortunately though his rod didn't do as well. It broke at the tip when setting the hook on a largemouth around lunchtime. As i bought this off  Ebay i don't know whether Allstar will honor any warranty issues. It strikes me as strange that the rod should break so easily with a 15 year old at the controls.
